Build and Kill Zombies: Controls Reference

Last updated 2026-09-18Unofficial player article

Find the Build and DRIVE inputs, understand garage interactions and use the on-screen RETURN prompt at the end of a run.

Build and Kill Zombies controls depend on where you are: the garage uses building and interaction inputs, while DRIVE starts a run. B opens Build; F or the green DRIVE button launches the assembled car. When fuel empties, follow the displayed RETURN prompt rather than guessing a return shortcut.

Match the input to the current screen

Keyboard actions are useful on a keyboard setup, but the visible game interface remains the best guide when an input does not match your device. The control names below describe the recorded keyboard interface, not a promise that every platform has the same buttons.

Use Build without confusing inventory and placement

Press B at the garage and choose the relevant tab. Vehicle is where the tutorial engine is selected; Weapons is where the tutorial Shredder is mounted. Selecting a part exposes highlighted mounting points. Place the item on a suitable point, then inspect the car itself before leaving the menu.

If you rolled an engine but cannot launch, look for the installed engine on the vehicle. Another roll will not fix an item that stayed in your inventory. For weapons, inspect the mounting point and support availability instead of treating the Weapons tab as a separate combat mode.

Interact with the garage's systems

WASD moves your character, Spacebar jumps and E interacts in the keyboard interface. Use the visible interaction prompt when approaching a garage station. CAR PARTS and SUPPORTS are different places to inspect parts; Select Category narrows the part family for rolls, and Index shows unlocked parts and their displayed stats.

  • Finish the prompted action before moving to the next station.
  • Check the selected category before paying for a roll.
  • Read the item or Skill description before using your Cash.
  • Return to the car and verify installation after shopping.

Launch and return deliberately

Exit Build before starting your driving run. Use F or DRIVE once the engine and tutorial weapon are mounted. Watch the fuel display during driving: a working input cannot keep an empty-fuel car running.

When the run ends on empty fuel, use RETURN to reach the garage. Read the reward before shopping so you can connect the next purchase to that run's distance or zombie kills. If a key seems unresponsive, first check the active menu and visible button. A screen-specific prompt is more useful than repeatedly pressing a shortcut from a different phase.

For assembly problems, continue with how to build a car. For a vehicle that launched and then stopped, use driving troubleshooting. Keeping those cases separate saves you from changing controls when the real limit is fuel or a missing mounted part.
