Build and Kill Zombies: Beginner Guide

Last updated 2026-09-18Unofficial player article

Build your first vehicle, mount the tutorial weapon, launch a run and turn the result into a useful first upgrade.

This Build and Kill Zombies beginner guide starts with a working car, not a perfect roll. Follow the tutorial, mount the engine and Shredder, then finish one driving run before deciding what to buy next. Your first result gives you a better shopping list than a screenshot of somebody else's expensive build.

Get a launchable car first

Follow the white tutorial arrows around your base. At CAR PARTS, complete the opening roll and obtain the Small Engine. Press B to open Build, select the Vehicle tab, choose that engine and place it at a highlighted mounting point. Owning a part and installing it are different steps: the engine must be on the car before it can launch.

Switch to the Weapons tab and mount the tutorial Shredder. Leave Build and use F or the green DRIVE button. The first goal is simply to enter the driving phase with both vehicle power and a weapon installed. Leave cosmetic redesigns until you have seen how the starter layout behaves.

Read what ends the first run

Fuel drains while driving. When it empties, use the displayed RETURN prompt to go back to the garage. Running out of fuel is a normal limit to plan around; it does not by itself mean the engine placement was wrong.

Distance and zombie kills contribute to Cash. Look at both rather than judging the run from its length alone. A longer drive with poor weapon contact and a shorter drive through more zombies answer different questions about your build. Before changing anything, remember what stopped you and whether the mounted weapon was meeting the zombie groups you steered through.

  • No launch: inspect the mounted engine before buying another part.
  • A working car stops on empty fuel: look at fuel capacity and your next vehicle change.
  • The car runs but kills disappoint: inspect weapon placement and available support slots.
  • You do not know what changed: repeat the same layout before spending again.

Spend the first reward on a specific problem

Cash pays for part rolls, buying rolled parts and Skills. Do not spend across all three systems just because their buttons are nearby. Choose the next purchase from the problem you observed, then check that you can actually use it.

A replacement engine needs a usable vehicle mounting point. A weapon needs somewhere to mount. More Support Skills add weapon mounting slots, while Luck improves roll outcomes; neither should be treated as a substitute for assembling the parts you already own. Read the displayed node and cost in Skills before committing your balance.

If fuel ended an otherwise useful run, compare the fuel parts in your inventory and Index. Small Tank and Fuel Barrel appear in beginner build demonstrations. That makes them sensible parts to inspect; it does not establish a universal best arrangement or a guaranteed distance increase for every car.

Make the second run informative

Keep a simple baseline: engine, fuel arrangement and weapon placement. Change one part or one Skill investment, then drive with roughly the same approach to zombie groups. Compare the end condition, distance, kills and Cash you can actually see. If several things changed together, the better reward cannot tell you which purchase helped.

A practical early progression loop is to build, drive, inspect the result and make one useful revision. Select Category can target the part family you need when rolling. Index helps you inspect unlocked parts and displayed stats instead of shopping by rarity alone. Car Builds also offers layouts to examine, but check missing pieces before treating a preset as an immediately usable upgrade.

When you are ready, use the car assembly steps for placement details, the controls reference for inputs or the Cash guide for spending choices. Your first milestone is a repeatable run and a clear next purchase, not ownership of every part in the Index.
